Letter to Parents of New Year 7s

13 July 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian

Important Information

It was lovely to see so many parents attend our new Year 7 Parents Evening on Tuesday and to have the opportunity to talk to you about our plans for September.

To ensure that you have all the information you need to make the first few weeks of College run smoothly I wanted to remind you of key dates and times as below. A lot of the changes have been put in place following feedback from our current year 7 students who have shared their anxieties about starting a new school and how we can overcome these.

Date

Arrival Time

Leaving Time

Notes

5 September 2017

Arrive at Reception in time to register at 8:50am in the White Cliffs Theatre

3:15pm

  • Base line tests will take place during the day.
  • Parents are invited to join your child at 2.25pm for an Extra-Curricular Fayre.
  • Only Year 7 students will be present on this day to give them time to adjust to their new surroundings.
  • Students will spend time with their tutor and will receive their timetables and planners.
  • Children are expected to be in school uniform.

6 – 15 September 2017

Registration begins at 8:50am – students go straight to their form rooms

3.15pm

If you have older siblings at the school please ensure you arrange, as a family, a suitable place for children to meet up if they are travelling home together.

Other important information:

Please ensure your child’s school bag is of a sufficient size to carry their equipment, books, pencil case and planners. We would recommend a bag that is a similar size to a rucksack.

Early Lunch

Your child will receive an earlier lunch at 1pm to enable them to get used to the routines and the refectory. Their lunch will switch to our normal timings of 1:15pm from Monday 11 September 2017.

Channel Uniforms

Channel Uniforms will be here on Monday 14 August 2017 from 10:30am to 2pm for you to purchase uniform. Please note that you need to allow 10 days for uniform to be ordered and ready. The shop does not open on a Monday so please ensure you buy your uniform in plenty of time before the new academic year begins.

Bus Passes

Information on how to obtain a travel pass can be found on the KCC website via the link below:

gov.uk/roads-and-travel/travelling-around-kent/bus-travel/bus-passes/young-persons-travel-pass

School Gate Barrier

The barrier on our school gate is usually locked at 3.15pm and raised at 3.35pm to ensure children can leave site safely. From 5 September to 15 September 2017 the barrier will not be in place but will resume the normal pattern from Monday 18 September 2017.

ParentMail

Communicating with parents is an important part of what we do and making sure you get the correct information about activities, events and things that really matter is something we care about.

We use ParentMail to communicate to parents and this will be beneficial to you because:

  • Messages will get to you reliably and on time.

  • Emergency or important information can be sent by text message.

  • Iphone and Android apps are available for parents on the go.

  • You will be updated with information on after college clubs and interventions.

  • You will be able to book Parents’ Evening slots.

  • You can report your child’s absence.

We have received so much positive feedback about ParentMail and will continue to send electronic messages and emails to communicate quickly and efficiently with you.

A registration link will be sent to you at the start of the new term, along with instructions on how to register.

Please note that if you have older siblings at Astor College their first day of term will be 6 September 2017. Year 12 students will receive separate instructions regarding registration.

We hope that we have included all the relevant information you need but should you have any questions then please do contact us.

Yours faithfully

Mr L Kane
